A major university suspected that a group of hackers
had taken residence on one of their computer systems and called
in Forensics Consulting Solutions to investigate.
An initial investigation by the Incident Response
Team confirmed the presence of cyber squatters and also quantified
the breadth and depth of their penetration of the system. Further
investigation confirmed that there was no destructive or malicious
activity by the group and that their activity was limited to the
use of storage and computing power of the system.
A thorough assessment of the system identified a
variety of points of entry the hacking group used to access the
system. The Incident Response Team hardened the system and worked
with the university IT group to remove programs and data placed
there by the hackers. The team then worked with the IT group to
establish an more comprehensive Information Security Program that
included regular monitoring and stress testing of the system.
